Speaking at party headquarters, Mr Anutin, who is also interior minister, said the project must be seriously considered as global shipping routes face increasing competition and possible toll collection at key straits.

"If Thailand can provide a reliable alternative that generates revenue and economic prosperity, we must move forward," he said.

He added the initiative could strengthen Thailand's self-reliance in transport and logistics amid growing debate over control of global shipping routes and transit fees.

Asked about local concerns, Mr Anutin said the Land Bridge is a matter of national interest, not just regional. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has indicated the proposal will be submitted to the cabinet between June and July.

Mr Phiphat on Saturday said the Land Bridge would strengthen the country's role in global logistics.

He said the project, estimated at about 1 trillion baht, would link deep-sea ports on the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, creating an alternative trade route between the Indian and Pacific oceans.

He cited growing uncertainty over global maritime chokepoints, including the Strait of Hormuz, as a reason to move ahead.

The project offers Thailand a long-term opportunity to become a regional logistics hub by facilitating cargo transhipment between both coasts.

Mr Phiphat rejected criticism the Land Bridge would offer limited benefits due to delays in loading and unloading containers.

He said studies showed more than 90% of global container shipping involves transhipment, where cargo is consolidated and redistributed rather than shipped directly.

"Vessels already stop to unload and transfer cargo at hubs such as Singapore," he said, adding Thailand could capture part of this traffic.

The government is seeking to attract more transhipment volumes.

Preparatory work has advanced, with the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning completing initial surveys.

Mr Phiphat plans another site inspection in May, with construction expected to begin later this year, subject to cabinet approval.

The project will be opened to bidding by domestic and foreign investors on equal terms. Final construction sites will depend on investor interest.

The government will not invest directly but will grant concessions and allocate land, while private firms fund development. Investment commitments could begin in the third quarter.
