On Wednesday afternoon, Victoria Police revealed they had also charged a 49-year-old Lancefield woman with the offence of hindering police.
The woman, who works at a real estate agency, is set to face court in November, when officers will allege she provided Brown with information ahead of officers carrying out their April 22 warrant.
Police did not elaborate on exactly what information the woman divulged, saying only that they became aware of her alleged actions during their investigation into the blackmail plot.
“Police will allege the woman, who is employed at a real estate agency, provided occupants of the Mill Park property with information about the impending police warrant,” they said in a statement.
Police said they uncovered “a significant quantity of cash” during the execution of the warrant at Brown’s Mill Park home in Melbourne’s north. They said they also seized two mobile phones.
Brown was subsequently charged with blackmail and possession of proceeds of crime, becoming the sixth person charged over an alleged blackmail plot that culminated in the inner west suburb of Brooklyn.
Joel Leavitt, another suspected bikie boss, was arrested and charged in February over the same alleged incident.
Taskforce Hawk, the police taskforce that laid the charges against Brown, Leavitt and others, was established after the Building Bad series of reports by this masthead.
The series revealed the extent of organised crime infiltration and corruption in the building industry in Victoria, on Big Build projects and within the formerly John Setka-led CFMEU.
A commission of inquiry into the CFMEU is also continuing in Queensland.
In a statement on Wednesday, Victoria Police said the taskforce was not only targeting criminal activity in the construction industry, but also “any professional facilitators of organised crime including lawyers, accountants and real estate agents”.
