Comfort Sunday, daughter of a 58-year-old woman, Titilayo Avoseh, who was hacked to death by unknown persons, tells AYOOLA OLASUPO about the family’s plea for safety and justice after the incident that happened in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos

What is your relationship with the late Titilayo Avoseh?

I am her daughter. I am the daughter of the woman who was brutalised and killed. I live in Lagos State.

What do you do for a living?

I work as a hairstylist in Lekki.

What happened the day your mother was killed?

The incident happened when I was at work. I received a call around 9 pm that my mum was lying flat on the floor and that they could not touch her. They did not know what to do, so they were asking where I was. I told the person who called me to try to help my mum, even if it was to take her to the hospital. I told her I was already on my way.

I left Lekki around 9 pm and started heading to Ishashi in Ojo. I was still on the way when I called my sister to start coming home, and I explained what happened to her. My sister got home before me, but I was very close to our street.

Before I got home, my sister called me and said that my mother had already died. She said the people who killed her broke her head in front of our house. I quickly ran back. I cried and ran to a police station not far from where I was.

When I got there, I met a large crowd. People from our community were already there to report the same case. After that, we went with the police to our house, and I found my mother’s body on the floor. She was already dead.

What were you told when you saw the crowd?

The killers broke her head with a stick. The stick entered her head and came out on the other side. She was covered in her own blood. Then, the police asked whom I suspected. They also asked who my mother had issues with before the incident, and I told them that the only person she was having issues with was her uncle, who also stayed in that compound with us.

The man and his children had been threatening my mother for a very long time to leave the compound for them. The man was a Celestial shepherd in that compound, so they had been challenging my mum, telling her to leave.

There was a day when the man and his children came with a tape rule to measure our house. So, I told the police that they were the ones I suspected, and the shepherd was arrested. I told the police that they had arrested the man and that he had been taken to Panti ( State Criminal Investigation Department).

The man had always been threatening my mum, even in my presence, and he had been doing that for many years. Two years ago, his son came to our house with a pistol to chase my mother out. I saw it, and it happened in everybody’s presence. Everyone in the compound saw it.

He came with a pistol to chase my mother out, claiming that she was a witch and had to leave because they wanted to sell the house. He climbed his building and threw stones at our house, breaking our kitchen window and gate. We reported it at the police station.

That day, my sister was at home, so she reported him to his father, the shepherd, and they also went to the station. This incident happened because they did not want to see her in the compound. They wanted to sell the house, so they were doing everything possible to make her leave.

How about your dad?

My mum was a single mother.

How old was she?

She was 58 years old.

Has your uncle made any confessional statement since he was arrested?

The only thing he admitted was that he used to argue with my mum about a tree in the compound that she cut down. He kept denying everything else but admitted they had issues. He was trying to shift the matter away from the main issue.

Has there been any meaningful progress in the investigation since the arrest?

Although he was transferred to Panti and detained, we have not seen any progress since then. The man’s children have also fled. We have not seen them since the attack.

How many children does he have?

They are two men.

When exactly did this incident happen?

It happened on Saturday, March 14, 2026.

From the video you sent, a man was seen lying in cold blood. Did he witness the attack?

We don’t know, but we think he might have witnessed it. After the incident on Saturday, we returned on Sunday to look for information. We went to a neighbour’s house. The police knocked, but there was no response, so they forced the door open. Inside, they found the man on his bed, covered in blood. We suspect he may have been attacked because he saw the killers. He is still unconscious in the hospital but alive.

Have incidents like this happened in your community before?

No, this is the first time. The police are still following up and carrying out their procedures.

How has the loss affected your family?

It has affected us deeply. My mother was everything to me. I have a daughter, and my mum took care of her while I worked. I am trying to stay strong because I want justice. Justice is the only thing that can give me some relief because I am completely broken.

The only strength I have is my desire for justice. We have not identified the attackers yet.

The shepherd’s children have run away, and we don’t know their plans. We have been moving from place to place because we are not safe.

If they could enter our home and kill my mother, they could come for us too. That is why I have been speaking out on social media, asking Nigerians and the world for help.

I want those responsible arrested so that my sister and I can be safe. I don’t want them to kill us like they killed my mother.

Has your mum been buried?

No, she has not. She is in the mortuary.

How would you describe your mother?

My mother was very easygoing and friendly. She loved helping people, and many people in the community can testify to that.
