The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and no fewer than 45 other prominent traditional rulers are to grace and play roles in a Yoruba historical and cultural festival, Ita-Ajero, to be held in Ekiti State.The Director-General, Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Wale Ojo-Lanre, said the Ita-Ajero festival “is about culture, tradition, heritage, and letting evolving generations know that the Yoruba have their history and their story.”
Ojo-Lanre spoke in Ado Ekiti on Friday while presenting a Certificate of Recognition of the festival on behalf of the state government to the Ijero-Ekiti Kingdom.
The DG said, “Ita-Ajero Festival is more than a mere social carnival; it is a formidable Yoruba historical and cultural fiesta.
“The historical content behind the Ita-Ajero festival, held in Ijero-Ekiti, revolves around an ancient practice that served as a unifying factor among notable Yoruba traditional rulers, who usually gathered at the abode of the Ajero in ancient times.
“Ita-Ajero Festival has very rich content. The content is historical, cultural, and cuts across traditions and heritage among Yoruba traditional rulers.
“Ajero, being one of the prominent sons of Oduduwa with a very large compound, will host other Yoruba traditional rulers, including the Ooni, who are of Oduduwa descent, converging in his abode to discuss and pray for the development of Yorubaland.
“These Obas will sit in a circular manner, with the Ajero and the Ooni at the centre. The Ajero will serve as the host, while the traditional rulers present will have their attendants holding their staffs of office, standing right behind them.
“In this manner, the Obas will offer prayers, followed by the Ajero and rounded off by the Ooni. They will also discuss challenges, threats, and opportunities for moving Yoruba land forward.
“These traditional rulers will wear their best attire during the convergence, and this is exactly what the Ijero community, especially the Kabiyesi Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole, seeks to recreate through collaboration with the Bureau.
“The Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi, who graced the two previous Ita-Ajero festivals, is also expected at the 2026 edition scheduled for August 21, alongside no fewer than 45 traditional rulers across Yorubaland.”
Ojo-Lanre said the presentation of the certificate of recognition to the community, through its collaboration with the Bureau, aligns with the policy thrust of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration aimed at enhancing tourism potential across the state.
Receiving the certificate on behalf of the Ijero-Ekiti community, Mrs Fadeke Oguntuase said arrangements for an upgraded Ita-Ajero Festival 2026 were already underway.
Oguntuase said, “Our visit to the office of the Director-General of the Bureau of Tourism Development for collaboration is part of our preparedness to kick-start the 2026 edition of the festival in a more elaborate form.”
She praised the Bureau for the honour done to the Ijero-Ekiti community through the recognition and for being at the forefront of promoting tourism across communities.
