The Federal Government and the Joint Health Sector Unions are set to resume critical negotiations over workers’ welfare and remuneration, with both parties fixing April 15 and 16, 2026, for renewed engagement under the Collective Bargaining Agreement framework.The decision followed a meeting held on Wednesday at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja, where stakeholders agreed to restart talks that had stalled for months and triggered a prolonged nationwide strike.
In a letter to union leaders, obtained by Saturday PUNCH on Friday, the National Secretary of JOHESU, Martin Egbanubi, said the resumption of talks signals a renewed commitment to resolving longstanding disputes.
He said, “I have the directive of the National Chairman to inform you of the resumption of the CBA Committee meeting today at the Minister’s Conference Room, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.”
“After exhaustive deliberations, it was resolved that the CBA negotiation shall resume fully effective from Monday, April 13, 2026.”
He further disclosed that, “the JOHESU team shall meet with the Federal Government team on Wednesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 16, 2026, to continue discussions on all outstanding issues.”
Emphasising the structure of the engagement, he noted that “each team shall conduct CBA negotiation separately as earlier established, while all parties are to take cognisance of stipulated and agreed timelines to ensure progress.”
Egbanubi reminded union members that, the last FG-JOHESU CBA meeting was held on September 11, 2025, when JOHESU submitted its proposal, but discussions could not continue due to unresolved issues surrounding the implementation of the adjusted CONHESS.
He stressed that the breakdown in talks led to industrial action, noting that, “this impasse culminated in the 84-day nationwide strike from November 15, 2025 to February 6, 2026, which disrupted health services across the country.”
While expressing cautious optimism, Egbanubi said the union expects tangible outcomes from the renewed dialogue.
“We expect that this resumption will provide the needed platform to address all pending issues in a fair and timely manner, in the interest of health workers and the Nigerian public,” he said.
