Africa CDC Secures Over U.S.$250 Million to Advance Africa's Global Health Security Agenda At the Lyon One Health Summit in Lyon (France)

AllAfrica EN 2026-04-09 04:55 Translated
Lyon / Addis Ababa / Brussels — The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) welcomes the outcomes of the One Health Summit held in Lyon, France, that affirms a decisive shift: Africa is no longer at the margins of global health--it is shaping its future.

Africa CDC expresses its appreciation to H.E. Emmanuel Macron for convening this landmark Summit and commends the leadership of H.E. John Mahama and H.E. Duma Boko. The strong and coordinated presence of African leaders ensured that the continent's priorities and agenda of Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) were not only represented, but advanced.

Africa CDC is proud to be a signatory to the "One Health & Beyond: Multi-stakeholder Declaration" that marks a critical step towards a coordinated global response to emerging health threats at the human-animal-environment interface, alongside a broad coalition of countries and partners, including Armenia, Botswana, Brazil, Cambodia, Cyprus, DRC, Egypt, France, Kenya, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, the WHO, FAO, and CGIAR.

Strategic Investments Aligned with Africa's Leadership

Africa CDC welcomes the European Union Commissioner Jozef Sikela's announcement of a €96.5 million investment to strengthen health security, including a flagship €46.5 million programme to advance antimicrobial resistance (AMR) response and build a resilient One Health workforce across Africa. Implemented under Africa CDC leadership, this programme will strengthen surveillance, expand laboratory capacity, and deepen collaboration with leading European institutions. €50 million investment in research and development will accelerate the development of new medical countermeasures against AMR and climate-sensitive diseases, reinforcing global preparedness.

A Defining Moment in the Fight Against AMR and Climate Threats

AMR remains one of the most urgent global health threats in Africa. At the same time, climate change is intensifying health risks across the continent. In this context, Africa CDC welcomes the financial support of a $166 million programme with the Green Climate Fund and the Global Fund to strengthen climate-resilient health systems in Africa.

Africa CDC also welcomes $40 million from the Pandemic Fund for its One health program.

A New Era: Partnership, Sovereignty, and Action

Africa CDC acknowledges the strong commitment of other partners including Gavi, the Global Fund, and Unitaid while reaffirming a clear principle: partnerships must align with Africa's priorities, systems, and leadership to move from fragmentation to coordination. Africa CDC will discuss all of these commitments with African leaders during the meeting of African High-Level Ministerial Committee on the Reform of the Global Health Architecture in the margins of World Health Summit Regional Meeting in April 2026 in Nairobi, the Africa Forward in May 2026 in Nairobi and the AMR Summit in Abuja in June 2026.
