The Federal Government has launched a nationwide Learner Identification Number system for students, issuing digital learner IDs to over 1.9 million candidates registered for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council.The initiative, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education, is designed to assign every student a permanent and traceable academic identity to support learning continuity, improve education planning, and enable timely interventions.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, Boriowo Folasade, on Friday, the system is aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian child has the opportunity to access education.
Describing the reform as a major step in the transformation of the education sector, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, said it aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, with emphasis on human capital development, improved service delivery, and technology-driven reforms.
“This initiative marks a turning point in our education system. By assigning every learner a unique number, we are building a structure that supports each child’s journey from classroom to career, while ensuring that no one is left behind,” the minister stated.
According to the statement, “In the first phase, over 1.9 million candidates registered for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council have already been issued their Learner Identification Numbers.
“This rollout represents a significant step toward strengthening education data management and safeguarding the integrity of public examinations.”
The Learner Identification Number is designed as a unique and permanent identity for each student, allowing for seamless tracking of academic progress across different levels of education.
Each identifier is structured to include details such as state, local government area, school, and a unique student code, ensuring continuity of records even when learners change schools or relocate.
The system builds on the Digitised National Education Management Information System, which has already created a national register of schools. Under this framework, every school in the country has been assigned a unique ten-digit identification number, forming the backbone of a unified education database.
By linking students to verified school records, the government says the platform will improve examination verification processes, reduce impersonation, and strengthen the credibility of national assessments.
Beyond examination security, the ministry noted that the system will also help identify out-of-school children, track student progression, detect dropouts, and address learning gaps through targeted interventions.
It added that the platform is fully digital, publicly accessible, and environmentally friendly, describing it as a major milestone in education reform.
